How to Read S in Morse Code
The letter S is three dots in a row. Read it as di-di-dit. Each dot lasts one time unit, and each gap between the dots lasts one unit as well.
Keep the three dots evenly spaced and close together. If any gap grows too long, S stops sounding like one letter and starts falling apart into smaller signals.

How to Send S with Sound, Tapping, or Light
The medium can change, but the pattern stays the same: three short signals in a row.
Sound
Play three short beeps of equal length with brief pauses between them. The result should sound like di-di-dit.
Tapping
Tap three times quickly with the same rhythm. Keep the gaps between taps even and shorter than the pause after the letter.
Light
Flash the light three times with even spacing. Steady timing matters more than speed.
A dot is one unit. The gap between dots inside S is one unit. The pause after the finished letter is three units. Learn the complete timing and spacing rules in the Learn Morse guide.
Learn S from E and I
S is built from shorter letters. E is one dot, I is two dots, and S adds one more.

S Is the First Letter of SOS
SOS in Morse code is ... --- ...: three dots, three dashes, three dots. The first three dots are the S, the middle three dashes are the O, and the final three dots are another S.
Practice the S section on its own first. Once the three-dot rhythm is automatic, add the three dashes of O and repeat. The full SOS signal is just those two shapes back to back.
See the complete SOS pattern, timing, and sending guide on the SOS page.
