How to Read J in Morse Code

The letter J has four signal elements in a fixed order: a dot, then three dashes. Read it as di-dah-dah-dah. The dot lasts one time unit, each dash lasts three units, and each gap inside the letter lasts one unit.

Keep the four signals together as one character. The dot opens the letter, and the three dashes carry the rest of the rhythm.

How to Send J with Sound, Tapping, or Light

The medium can change, but the pattern stays the same: one short signal followed by three long signals.

Sound

Play one short beep, then three beeps each three times as long. The result should sound like di-dah-dah-dah.

Tapping

Tap once quickly, then hold three longer taps for the dashes. Keep the gaps between signals shorter than the pause after the letter.

Light

Flash the light briefly, then hold it for three longer flashes. Give every dash the same full length.

A dot is one unit. A dash is three units. Each gap inside J is one unit. Learn the complete timing and spacing rules in the Learn Morse guide.
